The Story

Katie Panos is a Certified Journeyman Farrier with the American Farrier's Association (AFA).  She frequently attends continuing education events, competes occasionally, and is an active member of the AFA's Research and Communication Committees.

In 2014 after burnout in academic science, Katie rode along with Rick Howe to do something different than lab work, maybe learn enough to do her own future horses.  Rick suggested farrier school and with encouragement from her husband, she attended Oklahoma Horseshoeing school in April 2014.  After school she moved to Michigan to attend Michigan State University for a PhD in bone biology while doing farriery part time under further tutelage of David Hallock CJF, ASF.  In 2016 she quit graduate school and entered a formal apprenticeship through late 2017.

She got her CF in September of 2017. In between her apprenticeship and moving back to NH she was able to ride along with many mid-western farriers to give her a well rounded perspective in many types and styles of farriery.  She continued this into 2019 riding with many respected New England farriers making this push for riding with other people include 30 farriers total with credentials between them totaling: 2 CFs, 19 CJFs, 3 AWCFs, 2 TEs, and 1 FWCF. She completed her goal of earning her CJF in October 2019.

In the research committee through the AFA she is able to educate farriers in the scientific method and assist them in study design so farriers can start contributing their own science about the equine foot, learn how to read and comprehend scientific literature, among other tools.

Spring of 2019 she lives in Brooklyn, CT with her husband and 2 bunnies. She is a dressage rider currently learning how to drive with some experience in jumping, trail, and a bit of western with horse experience totaling over 20 years.
